Chapter Sixteen

Jack

I pulled Emma close, placing my hand at the small of her back. The dress, or lack thereof, was slaying me. The amount of skin she was showing should have been illegal for someone like her. I didn’t care for the stares from other men, peacekeepers or not. One particular copper was eyeing her like she was a piece of meat. With Emma wrapped in my arms, I kissed her neck nice and slow, making it clear that she was taken.

To me, jealousy was an unfamiliar emotion. I’d been envious of others throughout most of my childhood—people with more money, kids who didn’t have to fall asleep with empty stomachs—but I’d never wanted to pluck a man’s eyes from his skull for simply looking at a woman I considered mine. Hell, I’d never even wanted to consider a woman mine until now.

“Where did you learn to dance?” Emma leaned back a few inches so she could see my face, oblivious to the attention she drew. Throughout the ballroom, a song by Ariana Grande was playing. It was an unorthodox choice, but the tempo matched a waltz.

“My mum,” I replied, planting a chaste kiss on her lips. It was all I could do to keep my arousal at bay. You’re in the middle of Manhattan surrounded by the entire police force. Calm the fuck down.

We glided across the floor with the rest of the couples. She was an impressive dancer as well, but I could’ve assumed that. Emma and I had grown up very differently. Based on the appearance of her parents, their blood was as blue as it came. My evaluation of her on our first meeting was correct. I had no doubt her childhood was riddled with some form of cotillion.

Rare as it was, she’d managed to remain down to earth. On the legitimate business side of my work, I often ran into people who had no idea what it was like to survive without a safety net. I rarely took risks with capital. I’d clawed my way to the top with blood, sweat and terror. And I had every intention of staying there.

As we transitioned into the next song, Emma moved seamlessly with me. I wondered if she might want to meet up with her parents, but her grip on my hand and shoulder told me otherwise. Her ivory cheeks pinkened and the mass of people disappeared as I focused on her.

“You’re blushing,” I pointed out. “What are you thinking about?”

She smiled crookedly. “Besides how yummy you look in that suit?”

That made my heart beat a little faster. What was I, twelve? “Yeah, besides that.”

She bit her lip, the blush deepening. I leaned in so that my mouth was at her ear, watching with satisfaction as goosebumps rose along the column of her neck.

“Now I really want to know.”

She sighed. “It’s embarrassing. And petty.”

That had me confused. Emma was a lot of things I had yet to discover, but petty wasn’t one of them. “Dove…” I warned, my voice low.
